The ideal student:
✦ doesn’t need ANY previous experience with drawing or painting
✦ is eager to learn & motivated to grow
✦ is looking for a way to create & maintain a regular art practice
✦ is willing to take risks (with their art) and add new techniques & skills to their
repertoire.
✦ wants to build upon skills (of any level) to create work that is personal & draws
inspiration from the world around them & their lived experiences.
✦ is open to feedback, wants support, & will promise themselves they’ll try new
things, without judgment.
✦ is excited to be a part of a nurturing, lively community of artists of all skill levels.

What will you learn in this course:
✦ “Color Play: An Intro to Color Media” will begin with the basics of color theory (what is it, how does it work & why do we use it), before asking you to explore your “voice” as a creative being. We’ll cover concepts value, hue, tone and tint, as well as basic techniques for using 4 different materials. Every other week we will introduce a new medium & you will be given two opportunities to flex your art muscles & show off those new skills. You will learn to paint a still life in new and exciting ways, before turning that traditional skill on its head. Over the 8 weeks of this course, you will explore the mundane and learn to bring life to the things you see and do every day. We’ll create self portraits in new and exciting ways, and find inspiration in things you find around yourself. With colorful prompts and open ended assignments, you'll be able to practice how YOU use color to express yourself, and learn what colors say about you. You’ll gain insight into storytelling techniques and strengthen your conceptual skills, pattern making & ability to render texture. By the end of this course, you will have a working knowledge of Watercolors, Gouache, Alcohol Markers & Colored Pencils, and will be comfortable mixing and blending the 4 to create beautiful and personal pieces of your own.

What kinds of assignments should you expect?:
✦ Self portraits (not the kind you’re thinking!), painting from life, exploring your world outside and bringing that reference indoors for inspired fictional pieces. You’ll create your own signature palette & make a small series of pieces using it. I’ll teach you the basics of the still life & how colors can affect the story you're trying to tell. You'll learn which medium works best for what kind of art & how to get the most bang for your buck, while keeping costs low. You’ll get access to prompts & unique nudges to help you keep your sketchbook fresh and exciting. Curious how I make those pet portraits everyone loves? I'll show you! We'll explore imaginary landscapes, decorative wall art, abstraction and more. Wondering how to keep your color consistent from piece to piece OR how to choose the right palette for the job? I've got you covered there too. Assignments will build on learned skills from week to week, with each medium teaching you a little something you can bring with you to the next one.

Course Structure:
✦ Students in the “basic” course: you will work through 8 modules, presented weekly, over the 8 weeks of this course. Your first module will be waiting for you on September 3rd, with new modules being published every Sunday after that. Each module contains weekly PDF &/or video lessons, downloadable worksheets & resources.
✦ If you choose the “full” course option, you can also connect with other students on our private Discord server & participate in the OPTIONAL weekly, one hour, "Prattle & Preen" with me & your peers, where I’ll share live drawing demos, review your work and answer questions. You should expect to set aside approximately 1 hour per each module for reviewing materials, 1 hour for the optional Prattle & Preen, and time for making your art! This could be as short as 15 minutes, or as long as a few hours… whatever works best for your schedule (but I would encourage you to GIVE YOURSELF time to practice self care with these sessions.)

Requirements & Materials:
✦ Prior to the start of class (with plenty of time for any shopping you may need to do), you will receive a supplies & materials list, including links to specific products I will be using, should you choose to purchase those as well. However, you do not NEED to buy anything new or fancy, so long as you have access to the following:
✦ Media appropriate paper/surfaces (you will need Bristol & toned paper for the
markers and colored pencils, as well as hot press watercolor paper for the
paints.
✦ Prismacolor Colored Pencils* (you may use another brand, but know that
different pencils may not yield the results you're looking for)
✦ Watercolor, Gouache (preferred brands will be shared in your materials list,
with varying options by price), alcohol based markers (options will vary)
✦ Pencils, erasers, ruler, pencil sharpener, brushes, artists tape
✦ as the course is being taught online, you will need access to a computer,
preferably one with a webcam (so you can participate in the visual portion
of our live classes; not required).
you may also want to make use of a scanner or a scanning app on a smart
phone… but just a regular photo of your work will do just fine!
